Description

This course covers the basics of atomic and molecular structure, chemical bonding, phase and phase diagrams, structures of solids, elementary thermodynamics and kinetics, and introductory level acid-base and electrochemistry. Special topics on nuclear energy and waste, storage of intermittent energy in chemicals, the earth and human body from a chemist’s perspective and the chemical industry interpose regular classes.

Course objectives

Students are/have

  1. able to perform standard chemical calculations
  2. are proficient in using chemical symbolic language to describe chemical reactions
  3. can explain in detail the atomic and molecular structure of common materials
  4. can describe the relation between the microscopic structure and macroscopic properties for common materials
  5. discuss energy production and storage considerations from a chemical perspective
  6. discuss the chemical composition of planet earth and the human body
  7. developed an appreciation for chemistry as a science contributing to energy and health related topics

Timetable

Once available, timetables will be published here.

Mode of instruction

Strictly chemical subjects are introduced through lectures. Students study the material and regularly hand in home work in preparation of a written exam. Special topics are studied prior to class and discussed by individual student presentation and general debates. In parallel, students write a short essay on the chemical background of a topic of choice. Attendance of classes is required.

Assessment

Students are assessed on the basis of homework (20%), an written exam (40%), short individual presentations (20%), and an essay (20%). Peer review is used to provide students with feedback on a draft version of the essay.

Blackboard

There will be a Blackboard site available for this course. Students will be enrolled at least one week before the start of classes.
