Description

This course focuses on the Fin de siècle as an european movement in art, applied arts, architecture with many relations to music, fashion reform especially for women, dance, opera, literature, poster and economy, psychology and social revolutions more or less between 1890 and 1914. The art historical and visual main stream will be flanked by observations of symptoms like décadence, dandysm, l’art pour l’art, alterations in sexuality (Freud, etc.), theory of ornament, japonism, synaesthesia, syncretism etc. Arts and Crafts Movement and Art Nouveau as the floating world of ornamental forms will be interpreted in many filiations of artistic approach.

Course objectives

  • After having finished this lecture series, students will be able to analyse the main examples of Art Nouveau in architecture, painting, drawing, book art, sculpture, posters between 1890 and 1914.

  • Being able to perceive the interaction of all different kinds of art which was very important in the theoretical debates and the practical implementations.

  • Having some knowledge of the main literature on the subjects, and the theoretical approaches on which studies are based

  • Being able to analyse pictures, spaces, interiors in their iconografic and iconological network

Course Load

Course load in summary: 5 ects (140 hrs)

  • 24 hrs: Attending lectures (2 hrs weekly x 12 weeks)

  • 24 hrs: Lecture preparations (reading texts)

  • 15 hrs: Preparing mid term exam (multiple choice)

  • 33 hrs: Practical assignment: preparing and writing a 750 words paper

  • 40 hrs: Exam preparation (reading, writing abstracts etc.)

  • 04 hrs: Exams

Assessment method

  • Mid-course exam (20% of the grade): written exam consisting of 5 questions (multiple choice).

  • Short practical assignment (30% of the grade): paper (750 words).

  • Final exam (50% of the grade): written exam consisting of 8 essay questions.

Compensation: the weighted average mark should be at least 6.0 (rounded at one decimal).
Resit: one resit per insufficient mark.

Blackboard

Blackboard will be used to post announcements, the required reading list, powerpoints plus abstracts of the lectures, relevant events, and for submitting the assignment.
