SC Seminar Waste and Environment in Japan

Admission requirements

To enroll in the course, students must be enrolled in the Japanese studies program and should ideally have followed BA2 Lecture Waste and Recycling in East Asia.
h3. Description

This course will examine environmental issues in modern Japan, with a particular focus on waste. The topics will follow a historical trajectory, while focusing on several overarching themes. While reading about Japan’s specific environmental and waste issues, students will consider such topics as the relationship between econmic growth and the natural environment, the role of consumption, public good and public “bads”, environmental justice, and the role of waste in daily life.

Course objectives

By the end of the course students will
1. Become familiar with major environmental and waste-related issues in Japan
2. Develop critical analytic skills in an interdisciplinary context through reading, writing and discussion
3. Improve public-speaking and communication skills
4. Develop academic research and writing skills

Total course load: 140 hours
Attending seminars (12 × 2): 24 hours
Readings (approx. 40 pages per week) and assignments (Blackboard posts, presentation): 72 hours
Paper writing: 44 hours

Assessment method

  1. Participation element (including class attendance and discussion, short assignments and/or oral presentations): 40%
    1. Analytical element (essay plan): 20%
    2. Research element (research essay 2,000-2,500 words): 40%
      All three elements must be passed to receive a passing grade for the course. The course grade will be determined based on the weighted average of course elements once all elements have been passed.

Resit

Students can submit KARE essays after each session. Only the best 4 out of the total number of 11 will be calculated into the grade.

There is no ‘resit’ for the participation element and analytical element. For the essay to be submitted for the research element, two deadlines apply. Failure to submit by the second ‘resit’ deadline will result in a reduction of the grade in accordance with program regulations.
