Admission to the RMA-programme.

Description

Practical research work, preferably in direct relationship with or as preparation for the thesis. Various forms are possible: an internship at a heritage institution, participation in excavation, survey or other archaeological activity, analysis of (museum) collections or materials, archival study, interviews, short ethnographic fieldwork, etc.

The research internship starts with discussing a plan with a staff member of the heritage department, who will act as supervisor from the faculty (in addition, there is generally an external supervisor at the institution where the internship is carried out).

Course objectives

Learning how to:

  • set-up practical research;

  • conduct practical research;

  • write a research report;

  • place research results in a wider international and interdisciplinary perspective.

Mode of instruction

Practical work.

Course load

The course load will be distributed as follows:

  • Planning (0.5 ects);

  • Practical work (3.5 ects);

  • Evaluation report (1 ects).

Assessment method

  • Quality of the internship proposal (10%);

  • Motivation and work attitude (to be assessed by the (external) supervisor) (20%);

  • Short essay, reporting on the research practice (with catalogue of studied material when relevant) (70%).

The evaluation report should be submitted within 3 weeks after the practice / internship is concluded.
