Admission to the RMA-programme in Archaeology.
Description
Organised around on-going research of the Near Eastern/Mediterranean staff, this course will present you with earlier excavated as well as with recently excavated evidence (especially ceramics) from Byzantine cities (e.g. Athens, Ephesus, Chalkis) in the post-Classical era.
One of the key aspects to work on is, for instance, the Byzantine or Post-Byzantine city as consumption centre.
The course will take you into the practicalities of research, including data collection, methodology, interpretation of the available archaeological record, and ultimately the preparation of an end product (report, conference poster, online exhibition, publication, etc.).
Course objectives
Obtaining knowledge of the period, region, material culture, research problems, relevant literature, current debates and approaches concerning the theme of research;
Ability to critically assess current research and literature and to voice one’s well-argumented opinion concerning these;
Developing skills in presenting original research in an academic manner;
Developing teamwork skills.

Mode of instruction
Lectures and presentations;
Reading of relevant books/articles;
Individual assignments;
Discussion on the basis of these assignments;
Preparation of a (joint) report or other end product.
Course load
The course load will be distributed as follows:
7×2 hours of lectures (1 ects);
Written assignments (min. 2,000 words) (1 ects);
140 pages of literature (1 ects);
24,5 days of research (7 ects).
Assessment method
Active participation in class discussions and reading of assigned literature (20%);
Individual and joint research (40%);
Quality of written assignments on the basis of research (40%).

The reading list will be distributed prior to the beginning of the course.
