Description
In this course the topic will be documentary photography . We will discuss topical debates and some seminal theoretical texts about documentary photography.
Next to the reading of influential texts on the documentary strategies of photography, there will be a ‘hands on’ research of Documentary Photographs of the Special Collections Department of the University Library.
Course objectives
Students will have an indepth knowledge of the debates and the status questiones of Documentarty Photography.
They have gained an insight of analysing modes of documentary photography and how to write a research proposal based on a research question.
The students possess the following academic and professional skills: the independent academic study and interpretation of artefacts with the aid of relevant sources and specialist literature specific to the medium photography; a training in presenting research results clearly, orally or in writing, with accompanying argumentation.They will develop skills for presenting a selection of photographs with the use of knowledge and insight .

8 Lectures of 3 hours = 24 Hours
Practical work 1 hour per lecture= 8 hours
Literature 3 hours per lecture= 24 hours
Other contact hours (excursions)= 4 hours
Assesment: Paper 60 hours
Exhibition proposal: 20 hours
Assessment method
The course will be assessed in the following way:
A paper 80%
Assignments during the course (summaries of texts, discussions) 20 %
Blackboard
Blackboard will be used for the reading schedule, announcements, assignments and submits of reading questions etc.
