Admission requirements

This course is only available for students in the BA International Studies who have passed Persian 1 Beginners and Persian 2 Pre-Intermediate.

Description

Persian III is an intensive course for students who have passed Persian I and Persian II (Pre-intermediate). This course provides the students with upper-intermediate Persian language skills. By the end of the course, students will have learned to participate in conversations in both daily and professional settings. The course covers more advanced syntactic rules, vocabulary and covers all language skills including translation. By the end of the semester, students will have a better understanding of the Persian language and culture in order to interact with native speakers of the language. The course requires a substantial amount of self-study and active participation in class.

Course objectives

This course aims at level A2 / B1 of the Common European Framework.

  • Speaking: Learners will acquire communicative skills enabling them to converse about common matters. They will be able to describe aspects of their personal backgrounds, immediate environments and other matters in areas of immediate need in broad terms.

  • Listening: Learners will be able to understand standard speech on common topics and to extract the main point of messages and announcements.

  • Reading: Learners will be able to read and understand texts on familiar matters containing basic vocabulary.

  • Writing: Learners will be able to write texts in Persian script on familiar topics.

Mode of instruction

Two two-hour tutorials every week, with the exception of the midterm exam week. Attending all tutorial sessions is compulsory. If you are unable to attend a session, please inform your tutor in advance, providing a valid reason for your absence. Being absent will result in a lower of the participation grade with 0.5 for every absence after the first two (2) times.

Course Load

Total course load for this course is 5 EC (1 EC = 28 hours), this equals 140 hours, broken down by:

  • Attending classes: (4 hours per week over 12 weeks) 48 hours

  • Preparing classes, exams and extra activities : 86 hours

  • Assessment hours (exams and other assessment): 6 hours

  • Listening and speaking exam: 40%

  • In-class speaking/listening exam: 40%

To complete the final mark, please take notice of the following: the final mark for the course is established by determining the weighted average.
To pass the course, the average has to be 5.5 at least.

End grade

To successfully complete the course, please take note that the end grade of the course is established by determining the weighted average of the in-class oral and listening performance and exams.

Resit

If the final grade is insufficient (lower than a 6), there is the possibility of a resit.
The resit will be a written exam of two hours, and will test if the students have reached the end level of this semester. This exam consists of the following components:

  • Reading and writing;

  • Written dialogue;

  • Vocabulary and grammar.

Retaking a passing grade

Exam review

How and when an exam review takes place will be determined by the examiner. This review will be within 30 days after official publication of exam results.

Blackboard

Blackboard will be used for tutorial groups. Students are requested to enroll on Blackboard for this course, but only after correct enrolment in uSis.
