MA Philosophy 120 EC: specialisation Philosophy of Natural Sciences
MA Philosophy 120 EC: specialisation Philosophy of Psychology
Description
This course aims to give the student a firm grounding regarding Analyticity and its role in epistemology, philosophy of language and metaphysics. Kant and Quine are familiar names to every student of philosophy, but the notion – though not the name - goes back all the way to Aristotle. Contribution of Thomas Aquinas, Locke, Leibniz, Bolzano Frege and Wittgenstein will also be considered.
Course objectives
Students who successfully complete the course will have knowledge of the main theories about analyticity and their role in various philosophical disciplines, as well as a grasp of the underlying historical development.

Assessment method
Assessment
Active participation in class with assigments and discussion;
Preparation of a mid-term presentation
End paper on a topic determined in consultation with the course teacher
Weighing
The final mark for the course is established by determination of the weighted average of several subtests. A subtest can be graded as unsatisfactory. Class preparation and attendance are required and are conditions for submission of the paper.
Resit
The resit will consists of one examination, a paper. Class preparation, attendance, and practical assignments (presentation) are required and are conditions for submission of the paper for the resit. Students who have obtained a satisfactory grade for the first examination cannot take the resit.
Exam review
Discussion of the paper is by appointment after publication of the final grade.
