This course, which is financed by the Numata Chair in Buddhist Studies Fonds, will be offered in the Spring semester of 2018 and is open to all interested in the field of Buddhist Studies. Students who want to get credits for the course, should register for the course as for regular courses and will have to write the paper. Classes are on Wednesdays from 19:00 to 21:00. Classes start on February 7.

Description

This course introduces the history of the Buddhism in the central realm of the Indochinese peninsula, Thailand, with some attention given to the surrounding regions in a historical framework.

The following themes will be discussed in the course:

  • The Advent of the Buddhism in the central part of the Indochinese penisula

  • The Buddhism in "Mon" kingdoms and Khmer dynasty

  • The immigration of "Tai" people and their religion

  • The Theravāda Buddhism and “Tai” kingdoms: Sukhothai, Lanna and Ayutthaya

  • The Theravāda Buddhism under the Cakri dynasty

  • The Buddhism under the state control

Course objectives

The goals of this course are to
1. obtain basic knowledge about the history of the Buddhism in Thailand
2. understand the characteristics of the Buddhism in Thailand

Resit

A revised version of the final essay may be written if the overall mark for the course is “5.49” or lower. The deadline for this version will be determined in consultation.
In order to pass the course, students must obtain an overall mark of 5.50 (=6) or higher.
