Registration for the Minor European Union Studies or admission to the pre-master European Union Studies.

Description

With the European Convention on Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms and the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights, Europe has the most refined codifications of human rights at the international level. This course aims to provide students with a thorough understanding of the legal aspects and the economic and social rationales behind the process of European human rights integration with a focus on the European Union. It raises and answers questions about the EU in the international system of human rights protection, human rights theory, the scope and limitations of the human rights established in the EU Charter, and the system of judicial review with regard to human rights in the EU.

Course objectives

  • to provide students with a basic understanding of the law, theory and social as well as economic relevance behind the human rights protection in the European Union;

  • to provide students with an understanding of the current human rights challenges facing the European Union.

Seminars.

Course load

Total course load is 5 ec x 28 hours = 140 hours:

  • seminars (attendance is compulsory) and exams (14 × 2 hours = 28 hours);

  • studying literature (112 hours).

Assessment method

The final mark will be a combination of the following notes obtained during the classes, weighted in the following way:

  • course participation (20%);

  • presenting a judicial decision (20%);

  • written assignment (60%). The written assignment will only be marked if the student has attended the seminars.

Weighing

The final mark for the course is established by determining the weighted average.

Retake

There will be a retake for the written assignment.

Exam Review

How and when an exam review will take place will be disclosed together with the publication of the exam results at the latest. If a student requests a review within 30 days after publication of the exam results, an exam review will have to be organized.
