Description
Die ersten Zeitungen erschienen in Deutschland am Anfang des 17. Jahrhunderts. Das neue, periodisch erscheinende Medium gewann schnell eine große Leserschaft. Mit der Ausbreitung der Zeitung und später der Zeitschrift ging die Entstehung und Ausdifferenzierung des Journalismus einher. Während die ersten Zeitungen oft nur knappe Beschreibungen eines Ereignisses enthielten, entstand etwa seit dem Beginn des 18. Jahrhunderts ein breites und ausdifferenziertes journalistisches Angebot, das auf lokale, politische und intellektuelle Bedürfnisse der Leserinnen und Leser reagierte.
In diesem Seminar beschäftigen wir uns mit der Frage, wie sich der Journalismus im Laufe von vier Jahrhunderten entwickelt hat. Dazu werden wir uns mit Sachmeldungen, Reportagen, Meinungsartikeln, Essays, Glossen und Karikaturen beschäftigen und deren Veränderung im Zeitverlauf analysieren. Die Studierenden arbeiten dabei mit digitalisierten Originalquellen.
Course objectives
Students
are able to identify the most important journalistic genres and formats in past and present
are familiar with the history of the periodical press and the major scholarly debates on this topic
are familiar with current media-historical theories and methods and are able to apply them on their individual case studies
are able to analyze journalistic texts in their historical contexts
are able to develop and present a research question related tot he topic of this course
are able to present their knowledge and insights in German at an academic level, both orally and in writing
Research MA students should reveal in their coursework a more nuanced understanding of the complex relationship between social formations and cultural productions by means of a more detailed and thorough theoretical/methodological framework.

Weekly seminars: 26 hours
Study of compulsory literature and seminar preparation: 92 hours
oral presentation (including preparation): 20 hours
written paper: 142 hours
Assessment method
active participation in the weekly seminars (10%)
oral presentation and chairing a discussion (10%)
written paper (5000 woorden): (80%)
Research MA students will have to write an extra 3000 word paper on a topic to be decided in consultation with the tutor.
Resit
In case of an insufficient essay, the essay has to be revised/ rewritten.

Registration
Enrolment through uSis is mandatory. You can register until two weeks after classes have started however students are advised to register as soon as possible and preferably before the start of the course. In the case of electives: please be aware that most electives have a maximum amount of students who can enroll. Do not approach the course instructor in case the class is full. You will automatically be put on a waiting list.
