Course Description
Course can be taught in English on request.
The course offers an introduction to the Languages and Cultures of Africa. Topics that are covered are: Geography, Nature, Climate, Social organisation, Agriculture, Linguistic landscape, Body and Health, Masks, City planning and architecture, etc
Special attention is paid to the relevance of language and culture for these topics.
Part of this course involves compulsory meetings on [Academic Skills] (evaluation of sources and structuring an academic paper), organised by the [EAV].
Course objectives
Basic knowledge about the African continent; insight into the relevance of language and culture for the understanding of Africa.
General: searching and selecting information; use of libraries, developing style in writing.
Some meetings of the tailor-made programme Academic Skills are a compulsory part of the course.

Writing article: 50 hrs
Assessment method
Test on geographical knowledge pass conditional;
presenting and writing a short encyclopedic article (50%),
5-6 assignments (50%)
Resit for any part that has been graded < 5,0
Exam review
How and when an exam review will take place will be disclosed together with the publication of the exam results at the latest. If a student requests a review within 30 days after publication of the exam results, an exam review will have to be organized.

Blackboard will be used for literature and assignments.
