Admission requirements
This course is only available for Korean studies students who obtained the propaedeutic diploma and successfully completed all courses of the first semester of BA2.
Description
Students attend an intensive Korean language program at Sogang University in Seoul where they complete levels three and four (or higher). During five days a week, students have speaking, listening, reading and writing classes. Through this study abroad program, students make substantial and fast progress in linguistic competence (overall proficiency, grammar, lexis, oral-aural skills and fluency), in sociolinguistic competence (sensitivity to social conventions), and in pragmatic competence (functional use of linguistic resources).
Course objectives
The course objectives are as follows:
[Level 3] To be able to understand the main points of clear standard input on familiar matters regularly encountered in work, school, leisure, etc.
[Level 3] To be able to describe experiences and events, dreams, hopes and ambitions and briefly given reasons and explanations for opinions and plans.
[Level 4] To be able to understand, with ease and confidence, simple sentence-length speech in basic personal and social contexts and the main ideas of complex text on both concrete and abstract topics.
[Level 4] To be able to handle successfully uncomplicated tasks and social situations requiring an exchange of basic information related to work, school, recreation, particular interests, and areas of competence.

Total course load: 700 hours
Attending classes: 400 hours (20 hours per week over 20 weeks)
Preparing for classes, review and home assignment: 200 hours
Preparing for exams: 100 hours

Grade conversion
In order to pass this course, students should obtain level 4 or higher proficiency certificate from Sogang University or its equivalent. (The final grade will be processed only when successfully completing level 4 or higher)
The final grade is the average of level 3 (or higher) and level 4 (or higher) course marks.Resit
A level 4 resit (grammar and vocabulary, speaking, listening, reading, and writing) is possible at Leiden. Students may take a resit for those parts that were insufficient. (The sufficient parts cannot be re-taken.)
inspection and feedback
How and when an exam review will take place will be disclosed together with the publication of the exam results at the latest. If a student requests a review within 30 days after publication of the exam results, an exam review will have to be organized.
