Admission requirements

Only those who have successfully completed Korean 1 or equivalent can enroll.

Description

This intensive language course builds on the knowledge and skills gained during the first semester. It aims to further the acquisition of essential linguistic knowledge and practical languge use. During class, students will have various opportunities to apply their linguistic knowledge to actual usage of the language through: interactive and communicative activities; reading and listening activities; and assignments.

Course objectives

By the end of the course, students are expected to (or will be able to):

  • Gain 720+ items of new vocabulary (approximately 1500 accumulatively);

  • Understand and produce more complex sentences with a firm grasp of relevant grammar;

  • Understand and produce cohesive narration/discourse both in spoken and written forms;

  • Hold conversation comfortably about familiar topics and personal interests;

  • Attain better understanding of different registers and use them more appropriately according to context and situation;

  • Improve pronunciation and accent;

  • Gain insights into Korean language and culture.

Course Load

Total Course load: 420 hours:

  • Contact hours: 104 hours (8hrs x 13 weeks);

  • Preparation for each class including quizzes and assignments: 156~208 hours (12~16hrs x 13 weeks);

  • Preparation for midterm exam: 30~50 hours;

  • Preparation for final exam: 36~58 hours.

Assessment method

Students must pass the exams (midterm & final written exams and final oral exams). Thereafter final grades will be determined according to the following formula:

  • Attendance 3%;

  • Weekly in-class vocalulary quizzes: 5%;

  • Online assignments by each unit: 5%;

  • Workbook: 3%;

  • Midterm written exam: 30%;

  • Final written exam: 40%;

  • Final Oral exam: 14%.

Note. Detailed information on exams, resit policy, and requirements to fulfil in order to pass the course will be provided in the course syllabus.

Debriefing exam: Within two weeks after an exam, date and time for exam debriefing session will be announced via Blackboard in order for students to view their exam.

Remarks

As is the case for all Korean Studies courses, a strict attendance policy will be enforced. Attendance in all lectures and seminars is expected. Failure to attend results in a lower grade. If you do not attend more than three classes (per 5EC), you will not be able to continue attending the classes and your exam and/or paper may not be graded by the instructor(s). If you have a valid reason for absence, you may get dispensation from this rule, but this requires that you consult the coordinator of studies.
