Description

Publications which are considered milestones in academic art historical research are the focus point in this course. Students will get acquainted with methodologies and approaches in the art historical debate in past and present, illustrated with representative examples from the art history programme at Leiden University. Students will become skilled in reflecting on methodological approaches that are currently important for the study of art and art history.

Course objectives

  • Students get acquainted with theories and research methods of important art historians in past and present.

  • Students learn to analyse texts from important art historical thinkers from different perspectives and to ask and answer critical questions about the approaches showcased in those texts.

  • Students develop an understanding of the way the presented approaches and methods may shape academic research in a field of research of their own choice.

  • Students gain insight in the character of follow-up research using the methodologies and approaches discussed during the course in the MA and at PhD-level.

The weighted average needs to be at least 6.0 (=pass).

Resit

For all failed assignments, there is an opportunity for a resit. All resits will take place - as far as applicable - on the same moment, after the last examination has taken place.

Inspection and feedback

How and when an exam review will take place will be disclosed together with the publication of the exam results at the latest. If a student requests a review within 30 days after publication of the exam results, an exam review will have to be organized.
