Korean Language in Use

Admission requirements

Only those who successfully completed Korean 2 or the equivalent can enroll.

Description

This 2 hours/week language course is intended to enhance communicative language skills with an emphasis on speaking ability by introducing further grammar, useful and authentic expressions through Korean multimedia sources such as film, drama, news, webtoons and interactive activites. By the end of the semester, students should be able to comprehend and communicate on the broader topics of daily life using appropriate grammar, expressions, more complex constructions, and speech style.

Course objectives

  • Understand and produce idiomatic language naturally and accurately;

  • Understand and produce complex structured sentences;

  • Understand phonics rules and improve pronunciation skills;

  • Understand and engage in a spoken discourse on everyday topics;

  • Understand and increase awareness of contemporary Korean culture and social issue.

Weighing

Once you pass the exams, your final grade will be determined by the following combination of the items.

  • Weekly participation & assignments (30%);

  • Midterm project (10%);

  • Final written exam (30%);

  • Video project (30%).

Attendance

As per all Korean Studies courses, a strict attendance policy will be enforced. Attendance for all seminars is expected. If students are late for class three times, it is considered as one absense. If students do not attend more than 3 classes (i.e. 4th absence and on), they will not be able to continue attending the classes and their exam and/or assignments may not be graded by the instructor. If you have a valid reason not to attend, you may get dispensation from this rule, but you have to consult the coordinator of studies to do so.

Resit

  • Final written exam: Students are required to take a resit if the final written exam grade is lower than 6.0.

Inspection and feedback

  • Final written exam debriefing session will be held 2 weeks after the final written exam.
