Admission requirements

French - Intermediate is a French language course for students who are elementary level students (B1 CEFR) or if you can prove that you have a comparable level of French (5 or 6 years at school).

Description

Participants learn the specific language use which they need in the most frequently occurring situations or to speak about concrete or abstract topics. Various aspects of French life and French customs are covered. Participants study grammar and vocabulary and practice these skills in a communicative context. French is the language of instruction. Participants are expected to prepare for the lessons at home (approximately two hours per lesson).

Course Objectives

The course objective is a B2 level.

The required competences for a B2 language level can be described as follows:

  • Can understand the main ideas of complex text on both concrete and abstract topics including technical discussion in his/her field of specialization.

  • Can interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with native speakers quite possible without strain for either party.

  • Can produce clear, detailed text on a wide range of subjects and explain a viewpoint on a topical issue giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options.

Mode of instruction

This course builds up the language skills of students who have already an elementary knowledge of French and develops the full range of communication skills in speaking, reading, listening and writing. Course contents are grammar practice, vocabulary building, listening, speaking, presentation and writing activities. The course based on language learning books, requires a lot of self-study at home. The method of teaching is communicative and classes will be conducted primarily in French. A Brightspace site will support the course, hosting a toolbox, course syllabus + weekly overview, assignments and assessment.

Registration

Courses offered at Leiden University College (LUC) are usually only open to LUC students and LUC exchange students. Leiden University students who participate in one of the university’s Honours tracks or programmes may register for one LUC, if availability permits.
