Description

This course takes an in-depth look at the African continent from Agenda 2063 and SDG-related perspectives and interweaves sustainable approaches from multiple disciplines.

A flipped classroom guided self study (1 ECs) in the first week introduces and increases an understanding of Agenda 2063 and the SDGs. In the following six weeks, three modules will be presented by the participating faculties and institutions through interactive seminars and presentations that stimulate collaboration and knowledge sharing.

Module I: Economies - EUR (3 ECs) explores African socio-economic realities and partnering opportunities in context of SDGs 8 – 10, 12 & 17;

Module II: Resources & Infrastructure - TUD (3 ECs) explores available resources and infrastructure in Africa in context of SDGs 6-7, 11, & 13 -15;

Module III: Social Dynamics - LU (3 ECs) explores African socio-developmental realities in context of SDGs 1 -5 & 16.

The course concludes with an integration discussion and a one-day conference during which students present their group reports on regional challenges & opportunities.

Course Objectives

Upon successful completion of Exploring Africa, students will have:

  1. Acquired a foundational understanding of:
  • The relevance of Agenda 2063 and the SDGs;

  • Socio-economic state of affairs and novel paradigms in African context;

  • The engagements between human and material agents in African settings;

  • Current socio-developmental challenges and opportunities in Africa;

  • Shared responsibility and the interlinkages between disciplines.

  1. Developed skills and competencies to:
  • Integrate approaches that address the SDGs in a multidisciplinary way;

  • Distinguish innovative business approaches to address ‘wicked’ challenges;

  • Consider the role artefacts play in the relationship between humans and their world;

  • Identify social dynamics that promote and complexities that hamper sustainable development;

  • Academically discuss cross-cutting issues that impact African realities.

inspection and feedback

How and when an exam review will take place will be disclosed together with the publication of the exam results at the latest. If a student requests a review within 30 days after publication of the exam results, an exam review will have to be organized.
