Description
The course discusses chemical and biochemical routes for the conversion of renewable feedstock to value-added chemicals and materials with special emphasis on the underlying molecular chemistry and catalytic principles. Special emphasis is placed on establishing the conceptual links between the various types of renewables and waste streams to specific products and identifying the key challenges for the practical implementation of the respective processes in industry. The course is given in the form of lectures and interactive student assignements

This course is available only for students in the minor Sustainable Chemistry and Biotechnology.
Course Objectives
At the end of the course students:
have a broad knowledge of available chemical routes for the conversion of various renewable feedstock to chemicals and materials
can discuss and analyse alternative chemo- and bio-catalytic routes for the conversion of renewable feedstocks
can discuss and define key challenges for (bio)catalytic conversion of renewable feedstock
can design a conversion strategy for the valorisation of renewable / wastes
can describe and define the principles of the design of sustainable conversions of renewables
