Linguistics 5B: English Words and Phrases: Structure and Interaction

Course
2021-2022

Admission requirements

Pass mark for Linguistics 3 (or similar course).

Description

This course focuses on the structure of English words (morphology) and the structure of English sentences (syntax) and on how these two are connected. In the first part of the course, we will concentrate on morphology, and analyze the ways in which the building blocks of words (morphemes) can combine. In the second part of the course, we will investigate the interaction between English morphology and syntax (e.g. in passives) as well as cases where the boundary between morphology and syntax is unclear (e.g. in phrasal verbs). The discussion of the interplay between morphology and syntax will also involve considering a number of (generative) theoretical perspectives on the boundary between morphology and syntax.
