Description
This course is designed to consolidate communication skills of Korean language obtained from Korean 1 and 2 courses. There is a particular focus on getting familiar with colloquial language and developing practical skills to respond to it and produce further communication. Sources of colloquial language will be provided from different media resources such as TV drama, variety shows, movies, documentaries, webcomic, and lyrics. By the end of the semester, students are expected to have better understanding of different styles of colloquial communication on a wide range of Korean cultural topics such as college life, holidays, and various trends in daily life in contemporary Korea.
Course objectives
Reinforce grammatical features, vocabulary, and background knowledge learned from Korean 1 and 2.
Understand, pracite, and be able to use practical communication skills required in everyday conversation.
Be able to distinguish and apply pronunciation rules and improve pronunciation.
Become familiar with different types of media that are currently popular in Korea.
Increase awareness of contemporary Korean culture and social issues.

Students must pass the final written exam and submit the video creation project to successfully complete the course. Thereafter final grades will be determined according to the following formula:
weekly Quiz: 36%
Individual Project: 19%
Video Creation Project: 20%
Final Written Exam: 25%
Total: 100%
Resit
If a student fails to meet the attendance requirement, the student will fail the course. No resit or make-up will be allowed.
Each student has one chance to resit one weekly quiz upon request. The resit has to be scheduled within one week of the original quiz date.
There is no resit for the individual project. If the deadline is missed, the final grade of the project will be lowered from the student’s true grade. For example, if the final work is submitted within 7 days from the deadline, 10% of the true grade will be deducted. If the final work is submitted within 8~14 days from the deadline, 20% of the true grade will be deducted. No submission will be accepted thereafter.
If the final work of the video creation project is submitted after the deadline but before the final written exam day, 10% of the true grade will be deducted for late submission. If it is submitted after the final written exam, the student will fail the course regardless of the true grade of the work. If it is submitted between the final written exam and the resit exam day, 20% of the true grade will be deducted for late submission, and the modified grade will be reported as the final grade of the project.
A student must resit if his/her final grade of the final written exam is lower than 6.0.
Inspection and feedback
Feedback for two projects will be provided within two weeks from the final submission date. A debriefing session for the final written exam will be announced via Brightspace within two weeks from the exam date so students can view their exam paper.

Remarks
As is the case for all Korean Studies courses, a strict attendance policy will be enforced. Attendance in all lectures and seminars is expected. Failure to attend results in a lower grade. If you do not attend more than three classes (per 5EC), you will not be able to continue attending the classes and your exam and/or paper may not be graded by the instructor(s). If you have a valid reason for absence, you may get dispensation from this rule, but this requires that you consult the coordinator of studies.
