Advanced Korean Reading

Admission requirements

MA Asia Studies students: Korean Studies (120 credits); East Asian Studies (60 credits) – Korea track; and others with sufficient Korean language skills (TOPIK level 4 or higher level).

Description

TThis is an advanced-level reading class in Korean with emphasis on careful, active, reflective, and analytic reading. Students will read a variety of authentic texts, which can be structurally and/or linguistically complex. Reading materials encompass a wide range of topics in history, politics, society and culture of Korea, and different genres including scholarly works, literary works, newspapers, and magazines. To increase reading comprehension and to build background knowledge of Korea, students will research on given topics and raise questions to discuss. In addition, students will play an active role in expanding their lexical knowledge by creating vocabulary lists.

Course objectives

At the end of the course, a student will be able to:

  • Demonstrate knowledge of advanced Korean grammar.

  • Have a good command of a broad range of vocabulary, idiomatic expressions and colloquialisms.

  • Understand a wide range of long and complex texts, and recognize implicit meaning.

  • Summarize information from different texts reconstructing arguments and accounts in a coherent presentation.

  • Express him/herself clearly in an appropriate style on a variety of general, academic, professional or leisure topics.

  • Understand and actively engage in current debates on historical, political, social and cultural topics of Korea.

Resit

If the end grade is insufficient (lower than a 6.0), there is a possibility of retaking oral presentations (20%) and final written exam (30%). There is no resit for participation, assignments and reading comprehension quizzes.

Inspection and feedback

How and when an exam review will take place will be disclosed together with the publication of the exam results at the latest. If a student requests a review within 30 days after publication of the exam results, an exam review will have to be organized.

Remarks

As is the case for all Korean Studies courses, A strict attendance policy is imposed. Missing more than three sessions during the semester gets you barred from further attending the course and your papers may not be graded. Any absences must be notified in advance. Dispensation from the attendance rule for extenuating circumstances can only be given following consultation with the coordinator of studies.
