Description
This course is meant to learn about, critically evaluate and communicate about recent issues and advances in Education and Child Studies. Each week we will focus on a different topic . These topics will focus on both the applied as well as on the more fundamental issues in Education and Child Studies. We will focus mostly on topics that are of interest to the field of Education and Child Studies as a whole, which include research integrity, methodology, translating science into practice, but also on theories of broad interest to the field.
Course objectives
After this course, students should:
Have a thorough understanding of the various theories and methodological approaches which are commonly used in our field;
Have extended their theoretical framework needed for addressing relevant problems and issues related to education and learning;
Be able to critically select, study and analyze literature relevant to the issues and problems presented by the curriculum;
Be able to provide critical communications of a scientific debate, in an oral presentation as well as in a written review format;
Have profound knowledge of philosophy and ethics of social research, and be able to participate in discussions on these topics;
Be able to engage in the international academic debate.

Assessment method
Oral presentation (20% of final grade), five written commentaries (80% of final grade), and active contribution to discussions (possibility to earn extra credit).
Students should score higher than 5.5 on all assignments in order to pass the course. If a passing grade is not attained for the presentation, the student will receive another chance to present during the final class meeting. Each of the commentaries should receive a grade of higher than 5.5 to pass the course. Students will have a chance to rewrite and resubmit papers for which no passing grade was attained. The final grade is based on the oral presentation (20%), five written commentaries (80%), and active contribution to discussions (possibility to earn extra credit).
There is no final exam. Each of the five written commentaries is graded as well as the oral presentation. The final grade is based on these grades. There is no group work, all assignments are graded individually.

Registration
Education
It is mandatory to register for each course via uSis. This applies to both the lectures and the working groups, even if they take place online. Without a valid registration in uSis you will not be able to participate in the course and you will not have access to the Brightspace module of the course.
Exams
In addition, it is also mandatory to register separately in uSis for each exam (i.e. both the first exam opportunity and, if necessary, the resit) in uSis. This also applies to partial examinations in a course. This is possible up to 10 calendar days prior to the exam. You cannot take the exam without a valid registration in uSis.
NB If the exam concerns a paper or a practical assignment, you do not need to register in uSis.
