Admission requirements
This course is only accessible for BA Japanstudies students. Students must have successfully completed the course Applied linguistics Ib: Conversation & listening skills.
Description
Conversatie2a is designed for students who have completed a beginning level of Japanese (in terms of class time, somewhere from 250 to 300 hours of Japanese study). The primary goal of this course is to improve communication skills to conduct practical conversations—including the ability to determine level of speech formality, to state opinions, to give explanations, and make a short speech—and listening skills to pick up various types of information. Students will learn general knowledge, such as grammar and vocabulary necessary for communication at an intermediate level, and will review the contents of beginning level Japanese. This course will cover Lessons 1 through 5 of the “Tobira” textbook.
Course objectives
At the end of the course, students will be expected to perform sufficiently in speaking and listening skills at a basic level of proficiency, which is equivalent to approximately B1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Language (CEFR) in which students are required to give a prepared, straightforward presentation on familiar topics such as geography/climate, language, technology, sports, and health and food. “Tobira” is a content-based textbook that provides content which satisfies students’ interests while at the same time cultivating knowledge, thereby easing the transition into a higher level of Japanese proficiency.
