Korean for Academic Purposes (KAP): Hanja and Advanced Vocabulary

Admission requirements

BA2 students in Korean Studies who successfully completed Korean 3 (5722KK03) or Korean Language Study in Korea (5722VK07, level 3 or equivalent) can enroll.

Description

Expanding one’s vocabulary is crucial to become fluent in another language. The main aim of this course is to provide students with intensive Korean vocabulary learning opportunity. By learning basic 한자 and formation of words, students will have deeper understanding of a word and develop strategies to learn and use vocabulary in context.

Course objectives

By the end of this course, students are expected to (or will be able to):

  • Gain 1200+ new items of vocabulary, commonly used in daily and academic/professional context;

  • Have better understanding of the meaning and the usage of words by learning basic 한자 and word formation;

  • Develop strategies for new vocabulary learning and long-term vocabulary retention.

Assessment and Weighing

Final grades will be determined according to the following formula:

  • Weekly Quiz: 20%

  • Midterm and final written exams with closed questions and short open questions: 80%

Resit

  • No resit for a missed weekly quiz.

  • A student who fails to receive 6.0 or higher in each of the written exams should resit.

Inspection and feedback

Within two weeks after an exam, date and time for exam debriefing session will be announced via Brighspace in order for students to review their exam.

Remarks

As is the case for all Korean Studies courses, a strict attendance policy will be enforced. Attendance in all lectures and seminars is expected. Failure to attend results in a lower grade. If you do not attend more than three classes (per 5EC), you will not be able to continue attending the classes and your exam and/or paper may not be graded by the instructor(s). If you have a valid reason for absence, you may get dispensation from this rule, but this requires that you consult the coordinator of studies.

  • Dispensation from the attendance policy for extenuating circumstances can only be granted by the Board of Examiners.
