Description
In the past decades, the scope of the art historical discipline has become ever more global, as the “global turn” in the Humanities increasingly challenges Eurocentrism and the hegemony of Western cultural norms. World Art Studies aims to bring together disparate views on the arts and artistic traditions from all around the world. This course will introduce some of the pertinent theoretical, methodological, and historiographical issues, concepts, and approaches. We will look into sources and debates on artistic and cultural interconnections and exchanges between Europe and the world, from the fifteenth century until today, in the contexts of exploration, mercantile expansion, colonialism, imperialism and their legacies.
Course objectives
Gain insight into the history of art and architecture from a global perspective.
Acquire tools for approaching, interpreting, and appreciating art of different times, places, and cultures.
Develop a position in current museological issues of decolonization, restitution, and community collaboration.

Assessment method
Mid-term written assignment: essay 1500 words
Final exam: written exam (essay questions)
Weighing
Mid-term: 40%.
Final exam: 60%.
The weighted average of the (constituent) examinations must be at least 6.0 (= a pass). The mark for the final examination (or the main assignment) must be at least 6.0 (= a pass). The mark for all other constituent examinations must be at least 6.0 (= a pass).
Resit
A resit/ rewrite can be done for constituent examinations which are failed. As far as applicable all resits/ rewrites take place at the same time, after the final (constituent) examination.
Inspection and feedback
How and when an exam review will take place will be disclosed together with the publication of the exam results at the latest. If a student requests a review within 30 days after publication of the exam results, an exam review will have to be organized.
