Admission requirements

This course is for students of the MA Asian Studies (research) or the MA Middle Eastern Studies (research) who have completed their research (or are in the final phases of that research), and are thus in the process of writing their Research MA thesis.

Description

This course is individualized for each student, to maximize utility. We will address more generally problem framing, hypotheses and how to best summarize the main points of one's work, problems encountered in research and field work and how those were overcome, how most appropriately to incorporate critiques within one's presentations, oral presentation of results, publication strategies, and opportunities for further research.

Course objectives

Most basically, the course aims to do the followin:

  • Support the thesis writing process;

  • Offer preparation for post-graduation, in terms of information about publishing and possible application for a PhD position, as well as other career trajectories possible after completion of the degree.

Mode of instruction

  • Seminar

  • Seminar meets twice monthly (or more with student demand, and according to student numbers), and is relatively free-form. There is no additional work or assignments for the course beyond the expectation that students make good progress on the writing of their thesis.

Assessment method

This seminar has no formal assesment as this is part of the ResMA Thesis.
