Description
During the last decade the Chilean student movement has rapidly evolved into a powerful political actor, seriously challenging the entire political and economic order. By 2021, the former leader of this movement, Gabriel Boric launched his candidacy for the Presidential elections, obtaining a comfortable victory in December 2021. During his campaign Boric promised a total refoundation of Chile’s political, economic and institutional landscape, announcing his goal to put an end to neoliberalism in the country.
The purpose of this course is threefold. Firstly, to explain the triumph of the radical left in Chile, after three decades of centre-left and right-wing governments. Secondly, to analyse the main features of the new Boric government both in terms of goals as well as performance in its initial phase. And finally, this course aims to assess the probabilities that the Boric government can achieve its objectives.
Course objectives
This course aims to provide an in-depth knowledge of the nature of present-day social and political developments in Chile. By this, students will obtain extra insights and skills in identifying the relationship between social and economic factors and its political expression. They also will make use of combined academic and journalistic resources to produce a paper about a very recent event.
