2022-2023

Admission requirements

This is a first-year, first-semester course for students of Informatics. The only prerequisite is any high school algebra and trigonometry. Prior knowledge of or exposure to calculus (mathematical analysis) is helpful but not essential.

Description

In this lecture a number of topics from the analysis are discussed.
The material covered is both a continuation and an in-depth study of the high school pre-calculus. Topics include limits, continuity, differential calculus with applications, and other topics as time permits.

Course objectives

The aim is to provide students with the basic knowledge of mathematics necessary for computer science studies.

Timetable

You will find the timetables for all courses and degree programmes of Leiden University in the tool MyTimetable (login). Any teaching activities that you have sucessfully registered for in MyStudymap will automatically be displayed in MyTimetable. Any timetables that you add manually, will be saved and automatically displayed the next time you sign in.

MyTimetable allows you to integrate your timetable with your calendar apps such as Outlook, Google Calendar, Apple Calendar and other calendar apps on your smartphone. Any timetable changes will be automatically synced with your calendar. If you wish, you can also receive an email notification of the change. You can turn notifications on in ‘Settings’ (after login).

For more information, watch the video or go the the 'help-page' in MyTimetable. Pleas note: Joint Degree students Leiden/Delft have to merge their two different timetables into one. This video explains how to do this.

Mode of Instruction

Integrated lecture-seminar, twice a week.
The first 60 minutes will be dedicated to the discussion of new material, and in the last 30 minutes the students can work on exercises and pose questions.

Assessment method

Written exam, weekly homework assignments, online quizzes.

Students can earn a bonus of maximum 1 point on their exam grade by handing in homework every other week and participating in online quizzes.

The final grade is determined by adding bonus to the grade of the written exam, and then rounding off to the nearest half integer (e.g. 7.24 becomes 7 and 7.25 becomes 7 1/2).
Grades 5.4 and lower are rounded to a 5 and grades from 5.5 and higher to a 6. The final grade can never be more than a 10.
