Description
This course will discuss the main methods for collecting language use data from a variety of populations and in a range of social contexts. Methods introduced include surveys, questionnaires, DCTs, interviews, role-plays, match-guise, and citizen sociolinguistics. Emphasis will be on the choice of materials, naturalness of tasks, operationalization of variables and impact of investigator identity. Mixed methods as well as research ethics will be discussed. Students will have the opportunity to design a small-scale study and receive feedback on it in class. Readings will include journal articles ranging from classics to the latest developments in the field.

the most widely used data collection methods used in sociolinguistics
how to select a methodology to answer particular questions of sociolinguistic interest
how to design a sociolinguistic study
how to assess the fit between a research question and the methodology chosen to address it
how to give constructive feedback to peers
how to write up the methodology section of a research article

RESIT IS ONLY POSSIBLE FOR THE FINAL PAPER. IF THE GRADE FOR THE ORAL PRESENTATION IS TOO LOW AND AVERAGING BETWEEN THIS AND THE FINAL PAPER RESIT GRADE RESULTS IN FAIL (LESS THAN 5.5), THE ORAL PRESENTATION GRADE WILL BE DISCOUNTED (I.E., THE FINAL PAPER WILL COUNT FOR 60% AND THAT WILL BE ADDED TO THE 40% GAINED FROM THE ABSTRACT).
Inspection and feedback
How and when an exam review will take place will be disclosed together with the publication of the exam results at the latest. If a student requests a review within 30 days after publication of the exam results, an exam review will have to be organized.
