Description
We live in challenging times. The consequences of climate change, loss of biodiversity and other problems related to sustainability are becoming increasingly visible. The call to combat those problems is getting louder, and the ambitions in this area are increasing. The European Union aims to be the first climate-neutral continent by 2050 and has set the policy for a fair and inclusive transition, a so-called just transition. These goals requires far-reaching adaptation and behavioural change from governments, institutions, and companies. To achieve this, mandatory and ever more complex legislation is being promulgated.
This course examines in relation to companies the legal factors that play a role in the just transition to a climate-neutral European continent in 2050. Against the backdrop of European regulation, this course discusses the influence of said regulation on companies and the national (company) law of member states. More in general the “The Business of Sustainability & Law in the EU” course focuses on both the impact of business on sustainability as well on the impact of sustainability on business.

Objectives of the course
Upon completion of the course, students have acquired the following qualifications:
knowledge and understanding of the environmental, social, and governance dimensions of sustainability;
knowledge about and insight into both EU and national (proposals for) sustainability regulation;
knowledge about and insight into EU policy with regard to the just transition to a climate-neutral continent and the role and position of companies in this;
the ability to name and interpret dilemmas regarding sustainability, to formulate a vision on this, and to communicate orally and in writing to lawyers and non-lawyers in accordance with scientific standards.
