Description
This 6-week course provides students with a basic understanding of generative narrative and story-telling. It will offer an introduction in structuralist narratology, and compare the structure of narrative, as a model to endow the world with meaning, with that of the database. The course will train students in analyzing the structure of stories (in visual media), and offer tools to interpret and problematize the social and cultural values expressed in these narratives. In addition, the student will learn how to generate stories with the help of a digital tool, and evaluate the qualities of the result. The course will discuss work by Bal, Campbell, Manovich, Propp, etc.
Course objectives
After this course, students are able
to analyze the different levels of a narrative (fabula, story, text);
to offer an interpretation of the social and cultural values expressed in a narrative text;
to reflect on the narrative qualities of a generative and narrative text;
to reflect on the social and cultural values expressed in a generative and narrative text.

Inspection and feedback
How and when an exam review will take place will be disclosed together with the publication of the exam results at the latest. If a student requests a review within 30 days after publication of the exam results, an exam review will have to be organized.
Reading list
The reading list will be announced on Brightspace. Short essays that are not available on internet will be placed on Brightspace, longer texts will be available on the “werkgroepenplank” (working group shelves) in the library.
