Description
The emergence of the first indigenous Bolivian president, the rap in indigenous languages or the Bolivian women skating team in polleras are examples of indigenous dynamism in shaping Latin American societies today. This interdisciplinary course combines perspectives from history, cultural studies and linguistics to understand the key role of indigenous peoples for living heritage, cultural practices and redefinition of contemporary societies of Latin America. This course takes up on current developments in the indigenous world of Latin America, exploring the past to understand the present and to project into the future. Topics may include cultural and linguistic heritage, the globalization of indigenous culture, and indigenous irruptions in the socio-political sphere.
Course objectives
After this course students should be able to:
To understand and apply the basic concepts about the construction and evolution of indigenous peoples and communities in Latin America in a small scale research, considering positionality..
To demonstrate basic knowledge in the indigenous dynamism, agency, and resilience in the dialectic between original and non-original peoples.
To demonstrate basic knowledge of the structural complexities within indigenous communities and their contribution to the diversity of the Latin American States.
To understand indigenous original cross-borders relations that today translate into a growing global presence.
To collaborate on a small scale research and present the results in oral and written manner.

Resit
The resit is only possible for those students who have obtained a final course grade of 5 or lower.
The resit for the mid-term exam is an exam (30%)
The resit for the group oral presentation is a group written report (30%)
The resit for the written assignment is a revised version of it (40%)
Inspection and feedback
How and when an exam review will take place will be disclosed together with the publication of the exam results at the latest. If a student requests a review within 30 days after publication of the exam results, an exam review will have to be organized.
