The Academic Art of Publishing: Theory and Practice

Course
2023-2024

Admission requirements

No special admission requirements. Same as admission requirements for the BA Art History/BA Arts, Media and Society.

This course has replaced the course *The Cultural Field in Practice * (2022-2023).

Description

This course brings together all BA3 students in the process of writing and publishing an academic journal. Students will select, critically evaluate, edit and format articles submitted by student peers and staff, and write their own book and exhibition reviews as well as interviews, the best of which are to be published in our new department journal. This will be done in collaboration with peer reviewers and an editorial board.
Through (guest) lectures and excursions students will become familiar with the history, nature and practice of academic publishing. Students will subsequently use this knowledge when collaborating on the publication of the journal itself.

Course objectives

Concise description of the course objectives formulated in terms of knowledge, insight and skills students will have acquired at the end of the course. The relationship between these objectives and achievement levels for the programme should be evident.

  • Students will acquire knowledge about the aims, practices and history of academic publishing

  • Students will acquire hands-on experience of writing, editing and publishing an issue of a journal

  • Students will learn to assess work by others, provide constructive feedback and editing

  • Students will learn how to work together

Assessment method

Assessment

  • Midterm

  • Final assignment

Weighing

  • Midterm: 50%

  • Final assignment: 50%

Resit

The average of both exams must be at least a 5.5 (which is rounded off to a 6.0), in order to pass the course. Grades below 5.0 for either of the exams are not permitted. A grade between 5.0 and 5.5 for one of the exams can be compensated by the other grade. A grade below 5.0 always requires a resit.
In case one (or both) of the assignments receive a grade below 5, a resit is possible, in the form of an individual writing assignment. This resit is for the course as a whole and the grade for this assignment comes to replace the two partial grades of the other assignments. The resit grade is therefore automatically the final grade for the course.

Inspection and feedback

How and when an exam review will take place will be discussed in class. If a student requests a review within 30 days after publication of the exam results, an exam review will be organized.
