Description

General research skills aims to support you in conducting your first full research project additionally to you direct supervisors. We will discuss and learn about working in a group, accurate science administration, writing a paper, critical and scientific thinking. The lecturers of GRS are also available for individual support of the more general challenges that come with doing research. Hereby we will orient ourselves on and use the lectures from the Science Skills Platform.

Course Objectives

After completion of the course, students can:  

  1. Make a research planning for their Final Bachelor Internship
  2. Reproduce and adhere to the guidelines for bachelor research projects setup by the University
  3. Conduct accurate research administration to enable reproducibility of their research
  4. Implement a sound data stewardship strategy for their own research data
  5. Accurately and appropriately search, use and cite scientific literature in their own scientific reporting
  6. Write a scientific report at a high and comprehensive level
  7. Evaluate the quality of collected data. 
  8. Perform research administration to the extent that peers can reproduce their results. 
  9. Collect scientific literature and perform a reproducible literature search. 
  10. Write scientifically about the results of an analysis and provide an interpretation. 

Timetable

You will find the timetables for all courses and degree programmes of Leiden University in the tool MyTimetable. Any teaching activities that you have successfully registered for in MyStudyMap will automatically be displayed in MyTimeTable. Any timetables that you add manually, will be saved and automatically displayed the next time you sign in.

MyTimetable allows you to integrate your timetable with your calendar apps such as Outlook, Google Calendar, Apple Calendar and other calendar apps on your smartphone. Any timetable changes will be automatically synced with your calendar. If you wish, you can also receive an email notification of the change. You can turn notifications on in ‘Settings’ (after login).

Please note: Joint Degree students Leiden/Delft have to merge their two different timetables into one. This video explains how to do this.

Mode of Instruction

Lectures, tutorials, assignments and modules during Bachelor Research Project.

Assessment method

The final grade consists of the following partial grades:

  • Written exam and graded assignment (70%)

  • Score labjournal (15%)

  • BRP-related projects (15%)

Minimum grade:
Second and third year courses require a minimum, unrounded 5.5 grade to complete.
If a course has 2 or more written partial exams, the minimum grade only applies to the weighted average of the exams.
For partial grades from components other than exams (e.g. practicals, seminars, writing assignments), the bottom grade does apply to the individual components.

Reading list

An online ebook accompanying the course and a set of chapters from the Springer-link library will be published on Brightspace. These chapters can be downloaded for free using your ULCN account.

Every student of all years must enroll via MyStudyMap.

In this short video, you will see step by step how to enroll in courses in MyStudyMap. Note that your enrollment is only completed when you submit your course planning in the 'Ready for enrollment' tab by clicking 'submit'.

There are two registration periods per year: registration for the fall semester opens in July and registration for the spring semester opens in December. Please see this page for more information.

Please note that it is compulsory to register for every exam and retake. Not being registered for a course means that you are not allowed to participate in the final exam. Keep in mind that there are enrollment deadlines, see this page

Remarks

Inspection and feedback on the examination: exam can be reviewed and discussed during a class session, and assignments can be reviewed in person.
Brightspace will be used for communication, Q&A, lecture summaries, screencasts, and handouts.
