Data Science in Practice

Course
2024-2025

Admission requirements

This course is open to Master's students Data Science, Computer Science and ICT in Business and the Public Sector.

Description

This course prepares students for application of data science in real-life settings. Students work in Fieldlabs on real data problems. The students will explore the data-problem, research data availability, investigate the quality of the data and design a solution for the problem. Students work in teams, which are called Fieldlabs. They receive support from coaches who are cognisant of the data-problem and the context of it. In the lectures the students will receive practical tools that can be deployed for a solution that addresses the problem. The Fieldlab will be addressing data architectures which are federated, with localised repositories, making use of linked, semantic data curation techniques to achieve data-interoperability based on RDF. Materials will be provided during the course.

Course objectives

At the end of the course students are able to:

  1. Use the CRISP-DM-based procedure and development of the Business Canvas to plan a project;
  2. Use Linked semantic data models and understand data that is Findable, Accessible (under well defined conditions), Interoperable and Reusable (FAIR), and other related models (such as SOLID);
  3. Reason about the ethical and regulatory conditions for solutions in real-life data solutions;
  4. Establish team work based on interdisciplinary expertise, using a SWOT analysis;
  5. Present a coherent, reasoned solution in a professional format.

Timetable

The most recent timetable can be found at the Computer Science (MSc) student website.

In MyTimetable, you can find all course and programme schedules, allowing you to create your personal timetable. Activities for which you have enrolled via MyStudyMap will automatically appear in your timetable.

Additionally, you can easily link MyTimetable to a calendar app on your phone, and schedule changes will be automatically updated in your calendar. You can also choose to receive email notifications about schedule changes. You can enable notifications in Settings after logging in.

Questions? Watch the video, read the instructions, or contact the ISSC helpdesk.

Note: Joint Degree students from Leiden/Delft need to combine information from both the Leiden and Delft MyTimetables to see a complete schedule. This video explains how to do it.
