Meta Media

Course
2024-2025

Admission requirements

Bachelor degree (completed)

Description

In the MetaMedia course, an alternative approach towards the creation of original concepts and projects, by deploying the communicative and structural characteristics of media, is presented. The course introduces a broad definition of the medium and focusses specifically on 'unusual' media for the production and communication of creative projects. The aim is that student acquires the ability to recognise more unexpected aspects of media they encounter in their professional realm, and they are able to conceive more original and effective concepts to support their research and project production.

After the introduction of the theoretical framework of the course, the student works in small teams to create an original project within a given medium, to be presented at the last day of the course. The development trajectory of the project entails the research on, and analysis of, the medium and its (sometimes hidden) possibilities to function as a carrier of information, the conception of an idea to be expressed through the medium, the planning and execution of the idea in a presentable project, and the design of it within the specific presentation context.

During the course, some relevant examples of practices using a metamedial approach are shown and discussed.

Course objectives

After successfully completing the course the master student is able to:As part of this, students learn to:

  • Recognise and analyse media in order to understand their sometimes hidden properties and communicative possibilities;

  • Conceive an unexpected idea starting from the medium itself, and develop it from its conception though all stages towards a presentable work;

  • Develop a project within a collective - including planning, work division and sharing responsibility;

  • Present a project in a form that is effective and relevant to its nature as well as presentation context;

  • Create concepts and projects from a meta-perspective on the communicative and structural characteristics of media.
