Introduction to African Literature & Arts

Course
2024-2025

Admission requirements

Compulsory for BA African Studies. Those from other BA programs may be admitted with prior registration (please contact the course coordinator). MA Literary Studies: Pre-master Literature in Society.

Description

This course follows literary trajectories across the continent spanning from across literary genres (such as poetry, novels and short stories) and close reading activities. Possibly, the course will also actively engage in conversation with contemporary African authors working and living in the Netherlands in order to offer insights on the contemporary Afro-diasporic identity politics and to understand how Afropolitanism is relevant for both the diaspora and for Africa. Among required novels, a preference towards works originally composed in African languages will be privilieged ( i.e. The Perfect Nine or Matigari by Ngugi wa Thiong’o ; Ògbójú Ọdẹ nínú Igbó Irúnmalẹ̀, Forest of a Thousand Daemons, by Daniel Olorunfemi Fagunwa, Doomi Galo by Boubakar Diop). The section on art will be focused on paintings that bear witness to local involvement in the history of slavery and on the relation between African cinema and negritude.
