Admission requirements

This course is only available for BA students in Korean Studies. Only those who have successfully completed Korean 1 or equivalent can enroll.

Description

This intensive flipped-learning language course builds on the knowledge and skills gained during the first semester. It aims to further the acquisition of essential linguistic knowledge and practical language use. During class, students will have various opportunities to apply their linguistic knowledge to actual usage of the language through: interactive and communicative activities; reading and listening activities; and writing assignments.

Course objectives

By the end of the course, students are expected to (or will be able to):

  • Gain 720+ items of new vocabulary (approximately 1500 accumulatively);

  • Understand and produce more complex sentences with a firm grasp of relevant grammar;

  • Understand and produce cohesive narration/discourse both in spoken and written forms;

  • Hold conversation comfortably about familiar topics and personal interests;

  • Attain better understanding of different registers and use them more appropriately according to context and situation;

  • Improve pronunciation and accent;

  • Deepen insight into Korean language and culture, enhancing cross-cultural awareness through a nuanced understanding of societal norms, values, and communication styles.

  • Further develop independent learning skills by effectively managing self-study in the flipped-learning setting and participating in voluntary extra-curricular activities (e.g. weekly Korean language table and individual language exchange).

Assessment method

Assessment and Weighing

Students must pass the exams (the midterm and final written exams as well as the final oral exams). Thereafter final grades will be determined according to the following formula:

  • Weekly in-class vocabulary quizzes: 5%;

  • Midterm written exam: 40%;

  • Final written exam: 40%;

  • Final Oral exam: 15%.

note:

Prerequisites for the midterm written exams:

  • No more than two missing workbook units in 2A

  • Average 90% or higher in the 2A online pre-unit tests

Prerequisites for the final written exams:

  • No more than two missing workbook units in 2B

  • Average 90% or higher in the 2B online pre-unit tests

Resit

  • Students who fail to meet the attendance requirement will fail the course. No resit or make-up.

  • Students can do two vocabulary resits upon request, as long as it is within two weeks of the original quiz date.

  • Upon request, students are allowed to resit online pre-unit tests twice for 2A and twice for 2B. It is recommended that the resit be completed within two weeks of the original closing date, and at the latest, two working days prior to the midterm or the final exam.

  • There is no resit after the midterm written exams even if the grade are lower than 6.0.

  • If the weighted average grade of midterm and final for (1) listening, (2) reading, and (3) grammar, vocabulary, and dialogue respectively is below 6.0, students need to resit only the failed portion. The resit covers all material of the relevant area of the course and the resit grade will replace both the midterm and final.

  • Even if the weighted average grade of the written exams is 6.0 or higher, students will have to resit if they receive a grade below 5.5 in any of the final exams.

  • The final oral consists of two exams. Students should receive an overall grade of 6.0 or higher to pass. Students, who fail to receive 5.5 or higher in any of the two exams (even if the average of the two is over 6.0), need to resit the failed portion. Students who receive 5.5 from both oral exams need to resit at least one portion of choice to raise the overall average grade above 6.0.

Inspection and feedback

Within two weeks after an exam, date and time for exam debriefing session will be announced via Brightspace in order for students to view their exam.

Remarks

A strict attendance policy is imposed. Missing more than three (for 5EC language courses), six (for Korean 3) or nine (for Korean 1 and 2) sessions during the semester may get you barred from further attending the course and your exams may not be graded. Any absences must be notified in advance. Dispensation from the attendance policy for extenuating circumstances can only be granted by the Board of Examiners after consultation with the teacher.
