Description
This advanced Korean reading course is designed to help students engage with complex Korean texts relevant to academic and everyday contexts. Through this course, students will develop the linguistic skills necessary to review and utilize Korean literature effectively in their bachelor’s graduation thesis. The course emphasizes reading fluency, vocabulary expansion, and understanding of advanced grammatical structures. Students will explore a variety of texts, including academic papers and news articles, preparing them for the academic challenges of their final thesis projects.
Course objectives
By the end of this course, students will be able to:
Comprehend and analyze advanced-level Korean texts, including academic articles and news reports.
Develop effective reading strategies to enhance comprehension and retention of complex materials.
Expand their academic and general vocabulary to improve reading and writing proficiency.
Familiarize themselves with the styles and linguistic conventions of advanced Korean texts.
Utilize their reading skills to support their research and thesis writing, integrating Korean sources confidently and accurately by researching and organizing relevant information.
Present and discuss academic topics in Korean, demonstrating their ability to communicate complex ideas effectively.

Assessment and weighing
Students must meet the quiz requirements and submit a final project to successfully complete the course. Thereafter, final grades will be determined according to the following formula:
Online reading quizzes (16 quizzes): 16%
In-class vocabulary quizzes (8 quizzes): 4%
Bi-unit vocabulary and grammar tests (4 tests): 28%
Presentations: 2 x 6% = 12%
Assignment: 5%
Final project: 35%
Resit
There is no resit for a failed or missed online reading quiz unless arranged at least 12 hours before the due date. Students must achieve an average 55% or higher in all reading quizzes combined in order to pass the course.
Students may request up to two in-class vocabulary resits if failed (below 6) or missed. A resit should take place within two weeks of the original quiz date.
Students may request up to two resits for bi-unit tests only if failed (below 6) or missed. A resit to raise their grades will not be granted. All resits will take place during the final exam week.
If a student receives a score below 5.5 for the final project, the student must resit.
Inspection and feedback
Within two weeks after a quiz or test, students can review their quiz or test.
Within three weeks after a presentation or assignment, students can receive feedback.

Remarks
A strict attendance policy is imposed. Missing more than three (for 5EC language courses), six (for Korean 3) or nine (for Korean 1 and 2) sessions during the semester may get you barred from further attending the course and your exams may not be graded. Any absences must be notified in advance. Dispensation from the attendance policy for extenuating circumstances can only be granted by the Board of Examiners after consultation with the teacher.
