Admitted to pre-master Linguistics.
Description
The final assignment can be a part of the completion of your pre-master programme. This entails writing a scientific paper of approximately 16 A-four pages, excluding appendices (maximally 10,000 words) about a research topic in the field of Linguistics. This research must be supervised by one of the staff members of LUCL.
The Pre-master Final Assignment Linguistics is quite similar to a Bachelor Thesis, with two important administrative differences:
The Pre-master Final Assignment does not have a second reader, so you only need to find a supervisor.
You do not upload your Pre-master Final Assignment Linguistics in the Student Repository and you do not have to email to Hum - BA Thesis Humanities (bathesis@hum.leidenuniv.nl) when handing in your Pre-master Final Assignment Linguistics.
If you want to start with your Pre-master Final Assignment fill out the following form, preferably before 15 February: Pre-master Final Assignment form.
Deadlines Final Assignment:
15 February: submit Pre-master Final Assignment form
1 June: suggested deadline draft version
1 July: deadline final version
Pre-master final assignments in different fields:
Pre-master Linguistics and pre-master English Linguistics:
1) You will receive an e-mail from the BA Taalwetenschap/Linguistics with an invitation for a general meeting about how to find a topic and supervisor (second half of November).
2) Further, in semester 2, you can join the seminar of one of the tracks of the BA Taalwetenschap/Linguistics that best suits the topic of your Final Assignment:
Thesis seminar track Language and Cognition (including Computational Linguistics)
Thesis seminar track Taal in gebruik (Dutch taught; and check registering dates!)
Pre-master French Linguistics:

Pre-master German Linguistics:
1) You will receive an e-mail from a staffmember of the BA Duitse taal en cultuur with an invitation for a general meeting about how to find a topic and supervisor (second half of November).
2) If you write your final assignment in semester 2, you must join the thesis seminar BA Duitse taal en cultuur. If you write your final assignment in semester 2, you should attend the thesis kick off workshops of the Writing Lab Humanities

Course objectives
The thesis must demonstrate, among others, that the student is able to:
1. formulate a research question which displays insight into the methodological principles, central issues and state of the art of his or her field of research;
2. formulate a realistic research plan which fulfils the criteria set in the relevant field of research;
3. critically and analytically report on existing academic debates;
4. formulate ideas clearly and correctly.

To pass the course, the grade must be 5.5 or higher.
Resit
Anyone who has an insufficient grade may retake the exam. In case of a resit, the student should contact the Board of Examiners and the final assignment supervisor to set a new deadline.
Inspection and feedback
A debriefing will be organized if a student requests this within 30 days after the results have been announced.
