Admission requirements
This course is open only to students registered for the Translation specialization.
Description
The aim of this advanced translation course is to familiarize you with the challenges that a translator faces in practice. Practice makes perfect, which is why our emphasis is on the translation of linguistically and academically sophisticated texts covering a wide range of topics—with a focus on similarities and differences between Dutch and Anglophone cultures—text types and registers. However, we will also make a link to academic disciplines that are relevant to the translator's work such as linguistics (comparative grammar, semantics and pragmatics, lexicography and terminography), translation theory and culture studies, and ask ourselves to what extent theory helps us solve practical problems.
Course objectives
By the end of the course, students will be able to:
recognize and analyze a range of document types from a variety of professional contexts, and their function, structure and form
translate a linguistically and academically sophisticated, but non-specialist Dutch text into grammatically correct and stylistically appropriate English, and vice versa
understand the relationship between relevant theoretical disciplines (e.g. translation studies, linguistics, culture studies) and the practice of translation
apply knowledge and understanding of theory to practical problems
summarize, rephrase, restructure, and shorten, and adapt content according to readers’ needs, and draft texts for specific purposes
use and apply research-based thematic and domain-specific knowledge relevant to translation needs, using the most appropriate digital tools (e.g., search engines, corpus-based tools, text analysis tools)
draw appropriate strategies from translation-specific resources (e.g., style guides)
translate and revise texts from English into Dutch, and from Dutch into English, applying professional standards
translate and post-edit different types of (audio-visual) texts for different kinds of outputs and target audiences, using the most relevant translation technologies
