Psycholinguistics

Course
2025-2026

Admission requirements

None.

Description

How can humans engage in conversations so effortlessly, at high speed, and often without miscommunication? What are the processes and representations involved when transforming thought into spoken or signed language, and back? And how can we conduct experiments to find these things out? This course introduces core areas of psycholinguistics: the mental lexicon, sentence processing, and language production. Standard methods of psycholinguistic research will also be introduced, such as behavioural approaches (reaction time and error analyses, eye-tracking, etc.), as well as basic analysis of behavioural data.

Course objectives

A student who has successfully completed the course is able to:

  • describe and discuss the most relevant theories and models of language production and language comprehension

  • discuss and compare the main methodologies used in psycholinguistic studies

  • interpret and explain results from psycholinguistic experiments

Timetable

The timetables are available through My Timetable.

Mode of instruction

Lecture & lab visit (in small groups).

Assessment method

Assessment

Two written exams: one during mid-term (30%) and one at the end of term (60%). In addition, assessment includes class participation (10%).

Resits for both written exams can be taken on the official resit date.
