Korean Language in Use

Course
2025-2026

Admission requirements

This course is intended for BA students in Korean Studies who have successfully completed either Korean 3 (5722KK03) or Korean Language Study in Korea (5722VK07, TOPIK level 3 or equivalent).

Limited elective spaces are available for students from other programs. If you are not a Korean Studies major, please contact Dr. A.R. Nam to confirm whether your Korean language proficiency is sufficient to

enroll in this course.

Description

This course is designed for mid-intermediate learners of Korean who aim to develop fluency and confidence in authentic, spoken Korean. Rather than relying on traditional textbooks, students will engage with a variety of real-world Korean media — such as (web) dramas, movie clips, reality TV shows, YouTube videos, and entertainment programs — to observe, analyze, and imitate language used in natural, spontaneous contexts. Through creative and interactive speaking activities inspired by media content, students will explore diverse registers, speech styles, and cultural nuances in everyday Korean. The course provides an immersive and dynamic learning environment focused on performance and practical communication, bridging classroom learning with contemporary Korean society.

Course objectives

By the end of the course, students will be able to:

  • Understand and analyze authentic spoken Korean as used in popular media (e.g., web dramas, variety shows, and vlogs), including colloquial vocabulary, frequently used grammar patterns, discourse markers, onomatopoeia, and culturally embedded expressions.

  • Reproduce and creatively adapt spoken Korean for performance-based speaking tasks (e.g., rewriting scenes, dubbing, or skit creation), using appropriate vocabulary, grammar, and speech styles with attention to context, register, and speaker roles as modeled in Korean media.

  • Collaborate in small teams to create and rehearse performance-based language tasks based on media content.

  • Reflect on cultural elements and communication styles in Korean media and compare them with students’ own linguistic or cultural background.

  • Independently explore media content beyond the classroom and apply strategies to notice, record, and practice useful language for natural communication.
