Admission requirements

This course is part of the minor Crisis, Risk & Disaster Management. The course is taught at TU Delft by a lecturer from TU Delft. The course can only be taken within the framework of participation in the minor CRD. This minor is a cohesive set of courses designed to help you build your knowledge in a logical, connected way. It is not possible to follow single courses.

Description

In this course risk is approached as uncertainty and potential loss viewed from both safety and security perspectives. Students explore key theories, models, and metaphors through interactive discussions and analyses of real-world accidents that have shaped safety science and risk management. Throughout the course, well-known accidents are used as recurring case studies to stimulate active participation and deepen engagement with the material.  
Students will get an understanding of different units of analysis and approaches in different safety methods. They will also learn about the differences in scope between different safety paradigms.  
The following topics are discussed:

  • Similarities and differences between safety and security risk

  • Introduction and definition of risk concepts, such as hazard, loss, probability, frequency, threat

  • Introduction and application of risk assessment and safety assessment methods

  • Risk monitoring and risk reduction

  • Human factors and organisational aspects of safety

  • Different safety paradigms

Course objectives

After the completion of this course, you will be able to:

  1. explain the differences and similarities between managing risks in safety and security
  2. apply the different risk and safety assessment methods learnt during the lectures to practical case studies
  3. apply risk monitoring and risk reduction strategies to practical case studies
  4. critically compare major safety paradigms and their fields of application
  5. debate presented examples and theoretical approaches to manage safe human performance and organizational responsibilities to obtain a safer workplace.

Mode of instruction

The course equals 5 ECTS. This corresponds to a total time investment of 140 hours. The course will consist of nine on campus sessions, consisting of seven lectures and two documentaries followed by a plenary debate. In the last lecture, students can ask questions about the course contents and will be able to test their knowledge on test exam questions. The correct responses will be discussed in class. The responses are only meant to give you confidence with the actual exam, and no grading is involved for this practice exam. The total study load for this course is 140 hours, consisting of:   -     on-campus sessions (7 lectures + 2 guided documentaries + exam): 25 hrs -     self-study and exam preparation: 115 hrs  
Participation in all instruction forms is required in order to obtain a grade. The lectures will not be recorded. Students are not allowed to make any video or other recording of the lecturers.

Assessment method

An individual, on campus exam counts for 100% of the total grade (summative assessment). The exam is closed-book. The exam is digital and will be administered via the program ANS.
The exam will consist of a series of multiple-choice and open-ended questions where students will be asked about definitions, concepts, and models explored during the course in relation to a given topic/task. Open-ended questions will ask about understanding, an explanation and/or application of acquired knowledge.

Grading and passing the course
For all courses of the minor CRD, final grades are rounded off to the nearest half point, except between 5 and 6. At both universities, for grades between 5.0 and 6.0, a 5.5 and higher will be rounded up to a 6.0, and grades below 5.5 will be rounded down to 5.0. No final grades between 5.0 and 6.0 will be given.  
You can only attend the resit of the exam if:

  • You have scored lower than a 5.5 on the first exam

  • You were unable to attend the first sit of the exam  
    This course is part of the minor Crisis, Risk & Disaster Management. This minor needs to be completed in one academic year. It is not possible to retake courses that you have not passed during the following academic year. If you think an exception to this rule applies to you, please contact the Board of Examiners of the Institute of Security and Global Affairs (Leiden University).  
    No matter what academic institution a student comes from, the minor Crisis, Risk & Disaster Management falls under the course and examinations regulations of the bachelor Security Studies of Leiden University. These course rules are further expanded on in the rules and regulations of the Board of Examiners of the Institute of Security and Global Affairs (Leiden University). This Board of Examiners is also the relevant body for disputes.

Upon request, students have the right to inspect their exam for a period of 20 working days after the announcement of the results of the exam or the project. During the inspection of the assessed work, it is not permitted to copy the underlying examination questions. If a student wishes to inspect the results, the student needs to contact the module manager via e-mail to make an appointment within the period of 20 working days after the announcement of the results. This appointment cannot take place online.
