Description
This course offers an introduction to the phonetics of Modern English. It will examine, amongst other things, the production of speech, the description and classification of speech sounds, and how sounds are combined in speech and what influence they have upon each other. In the practical component of this course, attention will be paid to phonemic transcription.
Course Objectives
Students master basic phonetic terminology and learn how to describe English speech sounds using both articulatory phonetic terms and phonemic symbols.

Mode of Instruction
One hour lecture and one hour seminar per week.
Assessment
Three in-term quizzes (30%), final written exam (70%); if the average quiz mark is lower than the mark for the final written exam, the latter will count for 100%.
