Admission requirements

To be a registered student of the Research Master Latin American and Caribbean Studies.

Description

‘‘Amerindian Societies and Cultures’ focuses on the history of the indigenous people and cultures of the Americas, from Pre-Columbian times until today. This part of the programme is composed by two courses of 5 ECTS each.

The introductory course ‘Amerindian Societies Past and Present’ (prof.dr. W.F.H. Adelaar, mw. dr. L.N.K. van Broekhoven and mw.dr. E.W. Carlin). 5 ECTS, bloc 3, Wednesday, 15.00-18.00 hrs. This course is compulsory.

Students must also follow a second course of 5 ECTS, to be chosen from the following list:

  • ‘Indigenous Heritage of the Caribbean’ (mw.prof.dr. C. Hofman / mw.dr. E.W. Carlin). 5 ECTS, bloc 3, Thursday 13.00-17.00 hrs.

  • ‘Andean Culture History’ (prof.dr. W.F.H. Adelaar). 5 ECTS, bloc 3 and 4, Monday 13.00-15.00 hrs.

  • ‘Intercultural Communication, Heritage and Identity (prof.dr. M.E.R.G.N. Jansen). 5 ECTS, bloc 4, Tuesday 11.00-13.00 hrs.

Course objectives

Ability to understand complex long-term historical processes in which multiple cultural, ethnic, socio-economic and political factors prove to have been determinant. Knowledge of and insight in the general situation of the indigenous peoples of the Americas today, paying special attention to issues of cultural heritage.

Lectures and working group activities.

Assessment method

Contribution to discussion and a paper (depending on the chosen courses).

Blackboard will be used to post all the necessary information about the course (programme, time tables, announcements, etc.). Also announcements will be posted on interesting activities (such as Conferences, workshops, expositions, etc.), which are related to the themes analyzed during the courses.
