Objectives
Migration and ethnicity have been important elements in the formation of American society in the twentieth century. Every new group of migrants had to answer questions about their ethnicity and its relationship to American society in general. Older Americans had to come to terms with newer arrivals and their acceptability and unacceptability as Americans. Every group of migrants had to find its own way into American society, often with different results. Gary Gerstle has written an important book about this fascinating subject, which will be the starting point of this course
