First year psychology completed. Developmental Psychopathology (2nd year) or similar course recommended (in the latter case, contact the Psychology study advisors for admission).
Description
This course extends students’ knowledge of normal and abnormal development from infancy through to adolescence, and simultaneously builds knowledge around the approaches to assessment and intervention for clinical problems arising during this time.
Representative problems covered in the course include:
Anxiety
Autism
Somatoform Disorders
Psychosis
Attention-deficit / hyperactivity disorder
Conduct disorders
Eating disorders.
The seminars will be conducted by experts in the topic being addressed, generally psychiatrists, with a strong emphasis on the daily practice within the field of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.
Course objectives
To develop insight into, and comprehension of the current relevant developments within the field of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.
To get familiar with the different challenges in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and how they influence clinical decision making and health care.

Mode of instruction
Ten seminars, each incorporating a presentation by an expert in the field.
Assessment method
Exam: essay questions about the literature, discussed topics during lectures and one or two case examples in which a diagnostic or treatment policy has to be formulated. The textbook may be used during the exam.
