Child Neuropsychology: Theory and Assessment of Neurodevelopmental Disorders

Admission requirements

Master students Psychology having completed an advanced bachelor course on Clinical Neuropsychology.

Description

This course provides theoretical foundations in the clinical neuropsychological assessment and treatment of children with neuropsychological problems, including neurodevelopmental disorders (i.e. genetic disorders, epilepsy, traumatic brain injury) and neuropsychiatric developmental problems (i.e. ADHD, PDD). The cognitive, emotional and/or behavioural consequences as a result of these problems are being discussed.

The course involves 7 lectures and an exam addressing the following content domains:

  • Child neuropsychology: Dimensions of theory and practice and functional neuroanatomic developmental concepts

  • Common CNS disorders of childhood

  • Common neurodevelopmental disorders

  • Neuropsychiatric developmental disorders; i.e. ADHD, PDD.

  • Neuropsychological interventions within a developmental context.

Course objectives

By the end of this course students will be familiar with issues regarding:

  • the diversity of neurodevelopmental functioning in childhood and neurodevelopmental disorders;

  • contemporary theories of neurodevelopmental functioning and disorders in childhood.

Timetable

Mode of instruction

  • The lectures are supported by casuistic material and video demonstrations.

  • The lectures are presented by experts in the clinical field of Child Neuropsychology.

  • The lectures support the reading/study materials.

  • Attendance to all lectures is obligatory.

Assessment method

Written exam about theory and assessment of Neurodevelopmental disorders. Reading materials as well as information provided during lectures will be examined (a exam and a re-exam per year).
